St Brigid’s round tower in Kildare is not only climbable, but it is also the second tallest one ever built, measuring 33 metres (108 feet) tall. It was originally constructed in the 6th century, with a renovation occurring in the 12th century, it is made out of Wicklow granite.

While the natural hedgerows are disappearing, we can all re-boot the system and plant our own hedges are part of our own garden’s eco-system. When I was presented with a tricky landscaped steep hill-side retaining wall that was spread long and narrow across my front rural garden boundary, my first thoughts instantly brought me back to the hedgerows of my childhood. t could be a wonderful entry point for insects, bees, wild native birds and, most wonderfully, pests into the garden.

The green blue tropical-like waters lap at the jetty’s edges, shallow on one side, and the deep channel on the other side, a large tide sweeps in and out underneath, bringing in various fish and wildlife. Every Spring theres a beautiful space that I like to visit down one of these red dirt country roads that are everywhere around us, and visit some 100 year old daffodils, enjoying the sunshine streaming through the trees.

We came across this unique and curious building when we were in Renmark, South Australia recently. The town of Renmark is full of buildings in this era, and some of them are heritage listed and have been lovingly restored, like the magnificent and pristine Renmark Hotel.
